TUC has published Professor James Crawford’s advice that WTO
and EU may consider banning the import of goods from Israel due to the Israeli
settlements issue. He was sharing his legal view and told that the laws of
World Trade Organization and European Union allow banning the import of goods
from Israel.
TUC general secretary Mr. Brendan Barber has also given his
expert opinion that the consumers are not buying the Israeli goods and thus the
supermarkets have been forced to keep the Israeli goods away from the shelves.
But he said that retail stores may be forced to keep the Israeli items of the
shelf but it is impossible for the customers to force wholesalers to avoid he
Israeli items and that is why the TUC has been demanding to completely ban the
import from Israel.
He clarified that the TUC does not demand or favor a ban on Israel
and said that they only favored the ban on the goods being imported from there
and that too is to shun the Israeli illegal settlements in the Palestinian land
which is blocking the peace negotiations to succeed between the two countries.
TUC also urged the United
Kingdom to ban all sorts of financial transactions with Israel as it supports the Israeli settlements in
Gaza. Professor
Crawford’s opinion backs the TUC demand that EU as a whole or only the UK should impose ban on trade with the Israel in this
regard.
